The idea for a Lodge of Elks in the Holley-Navarre-Navarre Beach area was conceived by then Past Exalted Ruler, J C Yates and his wife, Barbara as early as 1990. The concept was presented to the Grand Lodge in 1992 and the work began.
The idea was accepted and the first Organization Committee meeting was held on February 28, 1993 at Cowboy's Restaurant in Navarre.
Guest speakers were: District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Gerald Hambrick and Northwest District Vice President, Joseph Walsh.
Monthly meetings were held until, on September 19, 1994, the request for dispensation was mailed to the Grand Lodge. The dispensation was granted quickly and the new Lodge #2787 was instituted on January 14, 1995 with 134 charter members.
Gerald Hambrick soon became a member of the NW District Advisory Council (Scrap Heap) while Joseph Walsh moved up to District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. Grover Eugene Wood became District Vice President and, when Joseph was elevated to serve on the scrap heap, became DDGER. Gene Wood was the DDGER priviledged to institute the new Lodge at Holley-Navarre.
The next year, 1995-1996, PER J C Yates became DDGER and is now also a member of the NW District Advisory Council.
Special dignitaries at the institution ceremony included Past Grand Exalted Ruler, Robert Grafton, Past State Presidents Aubrey Callaham and Robert Fluck, and many other State and Grand Lodge officers and members from Florida and Alabama.
The newest Lodge in our district now has about 170 members, having experienced a net gain each quarter since chartered.
